Utensil Envy

Utensil Envy

We are bombarded daily with scare-mongering headlines (microplastics this, forever chemicals that), so we are not here to lecture you further and make you feel like an inferior human because you reheat your leftovers in a plastic container sometimes. What we will do however, is educate you on why wooden utensils are a fantastic investment for your health and back pocket!

Why Wood?

In general, wooden utensils are more gentle on your cookware. Cookware can be a pricey investment so it makes sense to preserve the lifespan of your favourite pans.

Wood does not conduct heat, this means that your utensil won't heat up with use, and you can leave them in or on pots and pans without melting them, making them perfect for those dishes that require constant stirring.

Wood has natural antibacterial properties, making wooden utensils a safer option for food preparation when compared to plastic utensils. Furthermore, wood is non-toxic and inert, which means it will not react with your food to affect the taste, and it will not leach chemicals or microplastics into your food.

Wood is a sustainable and biodegradable resource, not to mention incredibly durable and long lasting, reducing the environmental impact.

The Tea on Teak

Our utensils are made from teak, which is a beautifully coloured dense hardwood, renown for its strength and durability. The natural oils within teak make it resistant to water damage, which means that it won't warp, crack or splinter with use. These natural oils make the teak naturally resistant to rot and decay, pests, insects and microbes.

Get the most out of your utensils

Caring for your utensils is simple. We recommend immediately rinsing them after use, hand-washing them with a mild detergent and a soft sponge (no steel wool!) before patting dry and then allowing to air dry completely before putting them away. If you need to deep clean them to remove stubborn odours or stains, you can use a solution of baking soda and vinegar, before rinsing and proceeding with a normal hand wash. We do not recommend soaking your utensils or putting them in the dishwasher. We recommend storing your utensils in a dry place with good air circulation, like in our stunning Ceramic Utensil Holder. Applying a food-grade mineral oil or beeswax every few weeks will keep them in tip top condition.
